The single most important thing to check before buying any hoverboard: UL 2272 certification. This is the electrical/fire safety standard that emerged after a wave of hoverboard battery fires in 2015-2016. Every hoverboard sold in the US should carry it. If a listing doesn't mention UL 2272 anywhere, don't buy it — full stop, regardless of price or reviews.

Age and Weight Range

Most hoverboards are rated for ages 8+ and have a minimum weight requirement (usually 44-265 lbs) because the self-balancing sensors need a minimum load to calibrate correctly. A child under the minimum weight will find the board unstable no matter how coordinated they are — this isn't a skill problem, it's a physics problem. Check the weight range before buying, not just the age range.

Learning Curve

Hoverboards have a real learning curve — expect a few days of wobbling and minor falls before a kid gets comfortable. Wrist guards and a helmet are not optional accessories here; they're the difference between a normal learning process and an ER visit. Budget for protective gear alongside the hoverboard itself.
